North Carolina – Dark clouds, wet pavement, and flashes of lightning are already setting the tone across the Charlotte region as another round of heavy rain moves through late this morning. Drivers should prepare for rapidly changing road conditions, reduced visibility, and pockets of standing water as showers and thunderstorms continue developing through the day.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, showers and thunderstorms will remain widespread today with an 80% chance of rain. Some storms may produce heavy rainfall, with additional rainfall totals between one-half and three-quarters of an inch, while locally higher amounts are possible in stronger thunderstorms. High temperatures will remain much cooler than recent days, topping out near 77 degrees.

The greatest impacts are expected during periods of heavier rain. Low-lying streets, small creeks, and poor-drainage areas could quickly collect water. Drivers along Interstate 77, Interstate 85, Interstate 485, Independence Boulevard, and Brookshire Freeway should allow extra travel time and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Visibility may drop quickly as heavier downpours move across the metro.

Rain continues into tonight with another 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Additional heavy rainfall remains possible before activity gradually eases. By Tuesday, scattered showers and thunderstorms remain in the picture with a 40% chance of afternoon storms before conditions improve significantly by Wednesday.

Meteorologists continue monitoring a broader weather pattern producing heavy rain across parts of the Southeast while severe storms and flash flooding remain active across portions of the Plains and Midwest. While widespread severe weather is not expected across Charlotte, isolated stronger storms could still produce gusty winds, frequent lightning, and torrential rainfall. Stay weather-aware if outdoor plans take you away from sturdy shelter.

Sunshine returns by Wednesday, bringing a sharp warming trend. Highs climb to 88 degrees Wednesday before reaching 93 degrees Thursday, signaling a quick transition back to midsummer heat after this stretch of soaking rain.
