Maryland – The sunshine reflecting off Baltimore’s skyline this late morning is only the beginning. A significant heat surge is building across central Maryland, and the hottest weather of the week is now just days away. Residents should use today’s milder conditions to prepare before triple-digit temperatures arrive.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, high pressure will keep skies mostly sunny and rain-free through midweek. Temperatures climb to 87 degrees today before reaching 92 degrees Tuesday. The hottest day arrives Wednesday, when highs are expected to reach 100 degrees, making it the most intense heat of the week. Thursday remains very warm with highs near 94 degrees.

The prolonged sunshine will rapidly warm roads, sidewalks, and buildings across Baltimore, Towson, Catonsville, Columbia, Glen Burnie, and surrounding communities. Outdoor workers, athletes, gardeners, and anyone spending extended time outside should shift strenuous activities to the morning whenever possible. Drink water often, wear lightweight clothing, and seek air conditioning during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Drivers along Interstate 95, Interstate 83, Interstate 695, Interstate 70, and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway should expect vehicles parked in direct sunlight to become dangerously hot within minutes. Never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle, even briefly.

While severe thunderstorms and flash flooding continue to affect portions of the Plains and Midwest, central Maryland remains under a quiet weather pattern through Thursday. Rain chances return later in the week, with a 30 percent chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms beginning Friday and continuing into the weekend. Although confidence in severe weather remains low, a few stronger storms cannot be ruled out if enough instability develops.
