Sioux Falls, South Dakota – The mid-July heat wave will continue to tighten its grip on eastern South Dakota this week as temperatures climb into the 90s each afternoon, with heat index values topping 100 degrees in some communities through the work week.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, hot and dry conditions will persist through at least Saturday with little relief expected. Afternoon highs will range from 88 to 98 degrees Monday, then rise into the 90 to 102 degree range Tuesday through Saturday. Overnight lows will only fall into the mid-60s to lower 70s, limiting overnight cooling and increasing the risk of heat-related illness.

The prolonged stretch of heat is expected to affect communities across southeastern South Dakota, southwestern Minnesota, northwestern Iowa and northeastern Nebraska. Despite the persistent heat, forecasters say no meaningful chances for rain are expected during the upcoming week, allowing the hot pattern to continue uninterrupted.

Residents planning outdoor work or recreation should stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, schedule strenuous activities during the morning or evening hours, and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations. Never leave children or pets unattended inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.

The National Weather Service will continue monitoring the prolonged heat, and additional heat advisories or warnings may be issued if conditions become more dangerous.
