Atlanta, Georgia – Another round of thunderstorms is expected to develop across north and central Georgia on Monday, bringing frequent lightning, locally heavy rain and brief gusty winds that could interrupt outdoor plans during the afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, storms that affected parts of central Georgia Sunday evening will be followed by additional thunderstorms across much of north and central Georgia on Monday. While not every community will experience severe weather, any thunderstorm will pose a dangerous lightning threat.

The greatest impacts are expected during the afternoon and evening as storms become more widespread across the region, including metro Atlanta, Athens, Macon, Gainesville, Rome and surrounding communities. Outdoor activities, youth sports, construction work and recreation could face delays as storms move through.

The National Weather Service reminds residents that if thunder is heard, lightning is close enough to strike. Move indoors immediately into a sturdy building or a hardtop vehicle and remain there for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before returning outside.

Avoid sheltering under trees, stay away from open fields and bodies of water, and avoid using corded electronics during thunderstorms. Drivers should also be prepared for reduced visibility and ponding of water on roadways during heavier downpours.

Additional updates or weather advisories may be issued Monday if stronger storms develop across the state.
