Midland, Texas – A prolonged stretch of heavy rainfall could bring a growing flash flood threat to West Texas this week as a slow-moving storm system taps into Gulf moisture, raising concerns for several inches of rain across parts of the state.

According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, confidence is increasing that a mid-level low will stall across West Texas from Monday through Friday, producing multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms. The greatest concern extends across West Texas, the Big Bend region and portions of the Hill Country, where repeated storms may lead to significant rainfall totals and localized flooding.

Forecast guidance indicates several inches of rainfall are possible over the five-day period, with the highest totals expected where thunderstorms repeatedly move over the same locations. The flash flood threat is expected to begin increasing Tuesday and could persist into Friday as the weather pattern changes little.

Low-water crossings, flood-prone roadways and normally dry creeks may become hazardous during periods of intense rainfall. Motorists should avoid driving through flooded roads, monitor local forecasts and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions if Flash Flood Watches or Warnings are issued.

While not every community will receive excessive rainfall, the slow-moving nature of the system means localized totals could significantly exceed surrounding areas. Residents across West Texas and the Hill Country should review flood safety plans now and stay alert for updated forecasts as confidence in the heaviest rain corridor improves through the week.
