Chicago, Ill. – Another prolonged stretch of hot and humid weather is set to grip northern Illinois this week, with the most intense heat expected Tuesday and Wednesday as heat index values approach 100 degrees across inland communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, afternoon temperatures will climb into the upper 80s to mid-90s through much of the workweek. The hottest conditions are expected Tuesday and Wednesday, when increasing humidity pushes heat index values to around 100 degrees, particularly away from Lake Michigan. No rainfall is expected through Thursday, allowing the heat to build under mostly sunny skies.
High temperatures are forecast to reach 87 to 92 degrees Monday, 90 to 95 degrees Tuesday, 90 to 95 degrees Wednesday, and 90 to 94 degrees Thursday. Areas close to Lake Michigan, including portions of Chicago’s lakefront, will experience some relief as afternoon lake breezes keep temperatures in the lower to middle 80s, while inland communities such as Naperville, Aurora, Joliet, Elgin and Rockford will feel significantly hotter.
Residents should limit strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, drink water frequently and take breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas. Those attending outdoor events or working outside should watch for signs of heat exhaustion, and children and pets should never be left inside parked vehicles.
The hot, dry pattern is expected to continue through at least Thursday, with Tuesday and Wednesday presenting the greatest risk for heat-related illness. Additional heat advisories could be issued if heat index values trend higher.
