Fort Wayne, Ind. – The hottest weather of the week is set to arrive across northern Indiana beginning Tuesday, with temperatures climbing into the 90s and heat index values approaching 100 degrees through Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, Monday will be warm but relatively comfortable, with lower humidity and afternoon highs ranging from 86 to 90 degrees. Heat and humidity will increase significantly beginning Tuesday, when highs rise into the 90 to 95 degree range. Wednesday is expected to be the hottest day of the stretch, with temperatures reaching 91 to 97 degrees before easing slightly Thursday with highs between 89 and 93 degrees.

Communities including Fort Wayne, South Bend, Elkhart, Warsaw, Goshen and surrounding areas can expect the greatest heat between noon and 7 p.m. each afternoon. While the week is expected to remain largely dry with abundant sunshine, the combination of hot temperatures and increasing humidity will elevate the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for people working or exercising outdoors.

Residents should drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. Check on older adults, young children and anyone without reliable cooling, and never leave children or pets unattended inside parked vehicles.

The hot, humid pattern is expected to persist through Thursday before temperatures begin to moderate later in the week. If forecast heat index values continue to trend upward, heat advisories may become necessary across portions of northern Indiana.
