Gaylord, Mich. – Anyone planning to spend time outdoors across northern Michigan should prepare for the hottest weather of the week Monday as heat index values climb to 98 to 103 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illness during the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, heat and humidity will continue building through Monday with mostly sunny skies and afternoon temperatures ranging from 88 to 96 degrees across much of northern Lower Michigan. The combination of high temperatures and humidity will make it feel near or just above 100 degrees in many communities between noon and early evening.
Communities including Gaylord, Traverse City, Petoskey, Cadillac, Alpena and surrounding areas are expected to experience the greatest heat during the afternoon. While only isolated showers or thunderstorms are possible overnight, widespread rainfall is not expected to provide meaningful relief before temperatures peak Monday.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and apply sunscreen if spending time outdoors. Limit strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas. Children and pets should never be left inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
Heat is expected to continue into Tuesday before temperatures gradually trend lower during the middle and latter part of the week. Shower and thunderstorm chances are also expected to increase later in the week, and additional heat-related statements may be issued if dangerous conditions persist.
