Amarillo, TX – Temperatures climbing into the mid-90s will create heat illness risks across the Texas Panhandle by Sunday afternoon, with even hotter conditions expected Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, highs Sunday will reach 88 to 92 degrees across much of the region, with Amarillo near 90°F and Borger pushing 93°F. By Monday afternoon, temperatures intensify further, peaking around 92 to 94 degrees region-wide, with Palo Duro Canyon reaching 96°F.
Cities including Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, Dumas, and Guymon will sit near or above record territory. Amarillo’s record high of 87°F for Sunday and Monday is likely to be tied or exceeded, while Borger could challenge its 90°F record. Dry air and full sun will increase dehydration risks, especially for those outdoors.
Hikers and visitors to Palo Duro Canyon face the highest danger during peak heating hours between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Officials urge frequent breaks, hydration, and avoiding strenuous activity during that window.
Heat risks will persist into Monday evening before a gradual cooldown begins. Additional advisories are possible if temperatures continue trending above seasonal norms.
