Houston, Texas – Drivers across the Houston metro could encounter water-covered roads and rapidly changing travel conditions beginning Monday as rounds of thunderstorms bring periods of heavy rainfall capable of producing localized street flooding through Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston, scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected each day through at least Tuesday, with the greatest concern centered on locally heavy rainfall. Southeast Texas is under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 4) for excessive rainfall Monday, while Tuesday brings a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 4) for much of the region and another Slight Risk focused over parts of the Houston area. Poor drainage and low-lying locations will be most vulnerable to flash flooding.

Rain chances increase to 70% to 85% Monday, including Houston, Conroe, College Station, Huntsville, Livingston and Galveston. Thunderstorms could also produce gusty winds and frequent lightning in addition to torrential downpours. Afternoon highs will generally range from the upper 80s to lower 90s, offering little relief from the humid conditions.

Motorists should never drive through flooded roadways, as water depths can change quickly and may conceal damaged pavement. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts, especially if traveling during the Monday evening or Tuesday morning commute, and have multiple ways to receive warning notifications.

Wet weather is expected to linger into midweek before rain chances gradually decrease later in the week. While flooding is expected to remain localized, additional heavy rainfall could prompt flood advisories or flash flood warnings if thunderstorms repeatedly track over the same communities.
