Springfield, IL – With dangerous heat continuing across much of Illinois this week, state officials are reminding residents that cooling centers are open statewide to provide relief from prolonged high temperatures and dangerous humidity.

According to the Keep Cool Illinois initiative and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), residents can use an interactive statewide map to locate nearby cooling centers, libraries, community centers, senior centers, village halls, public buildings and other designated locations offering air-conditioned relief during the ongoing heat wave.

The online resource also includes Illinois Tollway Oasis locations, giving travelers additional places to stop and cool off while on the road.

Cooling centers are available in communities throughout Illinois, including locations in:

  • Chicago and surrounding Cook County
  • Will County
  • McLean County
  • Communities across central, northern and southern Illinois
  • Illinois Tollway Oasis locations

Officials say cooling centers are especially important for older adults, young children, individuals with chronic medical conditions and anyone without reliable air conditioning.

In addition to the cooling center locator, the Keep Cool Illinois website provides heat safety guidance, including information on preventing heat-related illnesses, staying hydrated, recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and protecting pets during extreme temperatures.

Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors, relatives and others who may be vulnerable during prolonged heat.
