Tinley Park, IL – With Fourth of July celebrations approaching, an Illinois animal shelter is reminding pet owners that fireworks can be frightening for dogs and cats and often lead to an increase in lost pets each holiday season.

According to P.A.W.S. Tinley Park (People’s Animal Welfare Society), shelters typically see a dramatic rise in lost pets around Independence Day as loud fireworks cause frightened animals to panic and run away.

The shelter encourages pet owners to prepare before fireworks begin by creating a quiet, comfortable “safe space” where pets can retreat. Allowing pets to become familiar with the area ahead of time using treats and praise may help reduce stress.

Owners of pets that are especially sensitive to loud noises are encouraged to consult their veterinarian about anti-anxiety medications or calming supplements before the holiday. The shelter also recommends making sure pets receive exercise earlier in the day and taking dogs on walks before fireworks begin.

During fireworks displays, P.A.W.S. advises keeping all pets indoors, closing windows and blinds, and using televisions, fans, or soft music to help mask outside noise. Calming products, enrichment toys, or treats may also help keep pets occupied.

The organization also reminds cat owners to keep their cats indoors, noting that even pets accustomed to going outside can panic and become lost during fireworks.

Another important recommendation is ensuring pets are microchipped and that identification tags contain current contact information in case they escape.

According to P.A.W.S., fireworks often begin several days before the Fourth of July and may continue afterward, making it important to follow these precautions throughout the holiday period.
