Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Southern Wisconsin is entering its most dangerous stretch of heat so far this summer, with an Extreme Heat Warning taking effect at noon Monday as heat index values climb to 107 degrees. The combination of oppressive humidity and warm overnight conditions will create a heightened risk of heat-related illnesses through Tuesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect from noon Monday through 7 p.m. Tuesday for much of south-central, southeast and east-central Wisconsin. The warning includes Milwaukee, Madison, Racine, Kenosha, Waukesha, Janesville, Beloit, Sheboygan, Fond du Lac, Portage, Baraboo, Beaver Dam, West Bend, Lake Geneva, Jefferson, Columbus and dozens of surrounding communities.

Daytime heat index values are expected to reach 107 degrees Monday and Tuesday, while overnight heat index values will remain in the upper 70s, offering little relief after sunset. Areas immediately along Lake Michigan may experience slightly lower heat index values, but communities just inland, including much of the Milwaukee metro, are still expected to endure dangerous conditions.

The prolonged heat will significantly increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers and anyone without reliable air conditioning. The warm nights will also allow heat stress to build over time, making consecutive days of exposure more dangerous.

Residents should drink plenty of water, remain in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon. If work or recreation outside is unavoidable, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and take frequent breaks in shaded or cooled areas. Check on neighbors and relatives who may be vulnerable, and know the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday, and additional heat alerts may be issued if dangerous conditions persist. Continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service as this significant heat event continues across southern Wisconsin.
