Chicago, Illinois – A dangerous heat wave is settling over northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, bringing several days of oppressive humidity, triple-digit heat index values and little overnight relief through Wednesday. The hottest conditions are expected Tuesday afternoon, when some communities could see heat index values approaching 110 degrees, creating hazardous conditions for anyone without adequate cooling.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, peak afternoon heat index values of around 105 degrees are expected through Wednesday, with localized readings nearing 110 degrees Tuesday. Overnight conditions will remain unusually warm, with heat index values staying above 75 degrees and remaining close to 80 degrees in downtown Chicago, reducing opportunities for recovery before the next day’s heat.

Communities across the region, including Chicago, Aurora, Joliet, Elgin, Rockford, Waukegan, Gary, Kankakee, Valparaiso and surrounding suburbs, are expected to experience highs in the lower to middle 90s combined with tropical humidity. Areas farther inland will see the greatest heat, while even locations near Lake Michigan are expected to receive limited cooling during the afternoon.

The prolonged stretch of heat increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for older adults, young children, outdoor workers and anyone without reliable air conditioning. Large crowds attending outdoor festivals, sporting events and pre-holiday activities should plan for dangerous afternoon conditions through the middle of the week.

Residents are urged to drink water before becoming thirsty, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and spend as much time as possible in air-conditioned buildings. Outdoor work and strenuous exercise should be scheduled during the early morning or evening hours. The National Weather Service also reminds residents never to leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.

A gradual change in the weather pattern is expected later in the week as thunderstorm chances increase Thursday and especially Friday. According to the National Weather Service, storms could provide some relief from the intense heat, although if thunderstorms remain limited, heat index values between 100 and 105 degrees could continue into the holiday weekend.
