Binghamton, New York – A dangerous stretch of heat and humidity is set to arrive across Central New York and Northeast Pennsylvania this week, but not before a round of thunderstorms Tuesday could produce damaging wind gusts across parts of the region. By Wednesday afternoon, heat index values are expected to climb above 100 degrees in many communities, creating hazardous conditions that could continue into the Fourth of July weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop Tuesday from late morning through the afternoon. While the overall severe weather threat remains limited, a few storms could produce damaging wind gusts. Isolated large hail and even a brief tornado cannot be ruled out, although forecasters note confidence remains low on exactly where the strongest storms will develop.
Once Tuesday’s storms move through, the focus quickly shifts to an extended period of oppressive heat. The hottest conditions are expected Wednesday through Friday, with some locations potentially holding onto dangerous heat into Saturday. Forecast heat index values are expected to exceed 100 degrees in several communities, including Binghamton, Ithaca, Elmira, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and surrounding areas.
Among the hottest projected heat index values are Ithaca at 106 degrees Wednesday, Wilkes-Barre reaching 105 degrees Friday, Towanda near 102 degrees Wednesday, Binghamton around 103 degrees Wednesday, and Scranton approaching 103 degrees Wednesday. Overnight temperatures will only fall into the 70s in many locations, limiting the body’s ability to recover from the daytime heat.
The National Weather Service urges residents to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon and take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning. Outdoor workers should schedule additional rest periods whenever possible, and neighbors are encouraged to check on older adults, those with medical conditions and anyone without reliable air conditioning. Children and pets should never be left unattended inside vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
