Rapid City, SD – Dry grasslands across southern South Dakota could ignite quickly Saturday as strong winds and extremely low humidity create dangerous wildfire conditions from the Pine Ridge region to the Badlands.
According to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, a Red Flag Warning will be in effect from 9 a.m. MDT to 6 p.m. MDT Saturday across portions of western and south-central South Dakota. Areas included in the warning span the Custer County Plains, Pine Ridge Reservation, the Badlands region, Bennett County, Mellette and Todd counties, and Tripp County.
Southwest winds are expected to increase to 20 to 30 mph with gusts reaching 45 mph through the afternoon. At the same time, relative humidity could fall as low as 12 percent. That combination can rapidly dry vegetation and allow any spark to grow into a fast-moving grassfire.
Communities from Pine Ridge to Mission and Winner could see the highest fire danger during the afternoon when winds peak and humidity bottoms out. Fire officials warn that outdoor burning, welding, and activities that create sparks should be avoided.
Drivers should also be cautious along open highways such as U.S. 18, U.S. 83, and State Highway 44, where wind-driven fires can spread quickly through roadside grass.
Residents are urged to secure trailers, avoid parking vehicles on dry grass, and report smoke immediately to local authorities. Critical fire conditions are expected to ease after sunset Saturday as winds weaken and humidity slowly recovers. Additional advisories could be issued if dry conditions continue into early next week.
