Little Rock, Arkansas – Bright breaks of sunshine are fighting through the clouds this afternoon, but storm clouds remain close enough to keep much of central Arkansas on alert through the start of the new week.

Drivers crossing the Arkansas River and traveling along I-30, I-40, and I-430 may encounter changing conditions as scattered thunderstorms develop across the region. While much of the day remains warm and humid, forecasters are watching for a more active stretch beginning Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service, Little Rock will see temperatures climb near 91 degrees Sunday. Combined with increasing humidity, heat index values could reach 103 degrees during the afternoon. Outdoor events, youth sports, and summer recreation may become uncomfortable during peak heating hours.

Meteorologists continue tracking a broader storm pattern developing across the Plains and Mid-South. That same setup is expected to send additional thunderstorm complexes toward Arkansas through early next week. Some storms may contain heavy rainfall and gusty winds, especially Sunday night and Monday.

Rain chances increase sharply after sunset Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms become more numerous overnight and continue into Monday. Forecast data shows a 70% chance of precipitation Sunday night, followed by another 70% chance Monday and an 80% chance Monday night.

Plan extra travel time if driving Sunday evening or Monday morning. Wet pavement, reduced visibility, and localized ponding may create slower conditions on area highways. While widespread severe weather is not guaranteed, stronger storms capable of gusty winds remain possible.

The unsettled pattern lingers through Tuesday and Wednesday with additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures stay warm but gradually ease back into the middle and upper 80s.

Looking beyond midweek, signs point toward above-normal temperatures returning across Arkansas late next week as summer heat strengthens once again.
