Detroit Lakes, Minnesota – Dry grass and powerful wind could turn even a small spark into a fast-moving wildfire across western Minnesota Saturday afternoon as critical fire conditions build across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday for Hubbard, Becker, Wilkin, Otter Tail, Wadena, and Grant counties. Southwest winds will strengthen to 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, while humidity levels may drop as low as 22 percent.
The combination of dry vegetation, warm temperatures, and strong wind creates conditions where fires can spread quickly across open fields and grasslands. Communities including Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Wadena, Perham, and Breckenridge could see the most elevated risk during the afternoon hours.
Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning, brush fires, or unattended campfires. Farmers operating equipment and residents using trailers or chains along roadways should watch for sparks that could ignite roadside grasses.
Travelers on U.S. Highway 10, Highway 59, and Interstate 94 near Fergus Falls should remain alert for smoke or sudden grass fires that could reduce visibility.
Winds should ease after sunset Saturday, allowing humidity to recover slightly, but dry fuels mean fire concerns could return if warm, windy weather continues into early next week.
