Champaign, Illinois – Sunshine is breaking through the clouds across central Illinois this Sunday morning, but the calm scene may not last much longer. Darker skies are expected to build by afternoon as a surge of moisture pushes into the region and raises concerns for heavy rain, localized flooding, and difficult travel.

Drivers heading out later today could encounter rapidly changing conditions. Wet pavement, reduced visibility, and standing water may develop as thunderstorms expand across eastern and central Illinois.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Flood Watch remains in effect through late Sunday night for Champaign County and much of central Illinois. Forecasters expect 1 to 3 inches of rainfall, with locally higher amounts possible where thunderstorms repeatedly track over the same locations.

The setup aligns with a broader Midwest storm pattern developing today. Meteorologists continue tracking a weather system lifting north from the Plains into the Heartland. That system is expected to fuel widespread showers and thunderstorms across Illinois through the evening. While flooding remains the primary concern, isolated strong storms could also produce gusty winds and frequent lightning.

Travel impacts may become more noticeable by midafternoon. Motorists along Interstate 57, Interstate 74, U.S. Route 45, and Illinois Route 10 should allow extra travel time. Water can collect quickly in low-lying areas, especially near drainage ditches, creeks, and urban roadways.

Keep phones charged and monitor alerts throughout the day. Conditions could deteriorate quickly if heavier storm bands develop over the same communities.

The weather improves Monday as rain exits and temperatures settle into the mid-70s. Sunshine returns Tuesday and Wednesday with comfortable highs in the upper 70s before additional storm chances arrive later in the week. Longer-range outlooks continue signaling warmer-than-normal summer temperatures building across the Midwest toward the end of June.
