Marquette, Michigan – Gray clouds continue to drift across Lake Superior, and a few umbrellas may come back out before the day is done. While much of Upper Michigan enjoys breaks of sunshine, meteorologists are tracking a developing round of scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms that could arrive during the afternoon.
The weather remains manageable for most outdoor plans, but conditions may change quickly after lunchtime.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms develops after 2 p.m. across portions of central Upper Michigan. High temperatures will reach around 62 degrees, with light northeast winds keeping the lakeshore feeling cool.
The broader Midwest remains under a more active weather pattern, with heavy rain and severe storms expected farther south. Upper Michigan sits well north of the highest-risk areas. Still, a few thunderstorms could develop locally this afternoon and evening. Severe weather is not expected, and the Hazardous Weather Outlook notes no widespread hazardous conditions through next week.
Drivers on US-41, M-28, and roads near Sawyer International Airport should watch for brief periods of wet pavement and reduced visibility if showers move through. Outdoor events, hiking trips, and waterfront activities should keep an eye on the sky through the afternoon.
Conditions improve quickly Sunday. Mostly sunny skies return with highs near 62 degrees, followed by another pleasant day Monday. Temperatures gradually warm into the mid-60s by Tuesday and Wednesday.
The next meaningful rain chance arrives during the middle of next week. Showers become possible Tuesday night, with additional rain chances Wednesday. For now, the trend favors a comfortable stretch of early summer weather across Marquette and much of the Upper Peninsula.
Long-range outlooks suggest temperatures may trend above seasonal averages toward the end of June, bringing a warmer finish to the month.
