Omaha, Nebraska – A warming trend across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa will peak Wednesday as temperatures climb into the 90s ahead of another round of thunderstorms that could affect the Omaha metro and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a few spotty showers and thunderstorms may develop late Monday night into early Tuesday morning, but the more organized opportunity for thunderstorms arrives Wednesday. Forecast highs Wednesday are expected to reach 86 to 95 degrees, making it the warmest day of the week for many communities.
Cities including Omaha, Bellevue, Council Bluffs, Fremont, Blair, Lincoln and Norfolk could see thunderstorms develop during the day or evening as a weather disturbance moves through the central Plains. While the outlook does not currently specify severe weather, summertime storms can produce lightning, brief heavy rainfall and gusty winds.
The combination of heat and increasing humidity may create uncomfortable conditions before storms arrive. Residents spending time outdoors Wednesday should stay hydrated and limit strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Travelers along Interstate 80, Interstate 29 and U.S. Highway 75 should be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions if thunderstorms develop during peak travel periods.
A cooler and more comfortable air mass is expected to follow the midweek storms. High temperatures Thursday are forecast to fall back into the mid-70s to lower 80s, with pleasant conditions continuing into Friday under mostly sunny skies.
