North Platte, Nebraska – Fires could ignite and spread within minutes across western and central Nebraska starting by 9 a.m. Saturday as powerful winds and critically dry air take hold.
According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. CDT Saturday, covering the Sandhills, Niobrara Valley, Loup Rivers Basin, and the eastern Panhandle. South winds will sustain at 20 to 30 mph with gusts reaching 50 mph, while relative humidity drops as low as 10 to 15 percent.
The highest risk stretches from Valentine and the Nebraska National Forest down through the Frenchman Basin and Loess Plains. Open grasslands and forested areas, including Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge, could see fires move across areas. Dry air increases fire risk, especially during peak afternoon heating.
Travelers along Highway 83 and rural Sandhills routes may encounter reduced visibility near any active fire zones. Power infrastructure and rural properties face elevated risk if fires reach utility lines or structures.
Officials urge residents to avoid all outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay any activity that could spark flames. Fire crews warn containment may be difficult once a fire starts under these conditions.
The threat begins early Saturday and intensifies into the afternoon, with additional advisories possible if conditions develop sooner due to poor overnight moisture recovery.
