Tucson, Arizona – Drivers across southern Arizona may face rapidly changing conditions this afternoon as thunderstorms capable of producing wind gusts over 50 mph, blowing dust and locally heavy rainfall develop across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to redevelop this afternoon and continue into the evening after an active overnight period. The atmosphere will need time to recover, but forecasters say conditions remain favorable for stronger storms later today.

The highest chances for isolated strong wind gusts appear from Nogales northward through the Santa Cruz Valley and into portions of the Tucson metro area, where thunderstorm probabilities range from roughly 35% to nearly 50%. Gusty outflow winds may create sudden reductions in visibility due to blowing dust, particularly along Interstate 19, Interstate 10 and other exposed roadways.

In addition to strong winds, storms may produce frequent lightning and pockets of heavy rain. Low-lying areas, washes and flood-prone roads could see brief water accumulation during the strongest downpours.

Residents planning outdoor activities should monitor weather alerts closely and be prepared to move indoors quickly when thunderstorms approach. Secure loose outdoor objects, avoid driving through dust storms and never attempt to cross flooded roadways.

Thunderstorm chances will continue through the evening, with additional weather statements or warnings possible if stronger storms develop across southern Arizona.
