Kankakee, Illinois – Residents will have a limited-time opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous household materials during a one-day collection event scheduled for Saturday, April 18.

According to the City of Kankakee and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the event will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Public Works Department parking lot located at 401 W. Oak Street. The collection is hosted in partnership with State Representative Jackie Haas and the Kankakee Fire Department.

Accepted items include oil-based paints, used motor oil, solvents, pesticides, household batteries, cleaning chemicals, and fluorescent bulbs. Officials say these materials should never be placed in regular trash due to environmental and safety risks.

The event is expected to draw residents from across Kankakee County, with traffic likely increasing near the Oak Street facility during peak morning hours. Participants may be asked to remain in their vehicles while crews handle disposal.

Residents are encouraged to register in advance through the city’s website and to transport materials securely to prevent leaks. This is a key opportunity to reduce fire risk and protect local water systems.

The collection event runs rain or shine, with additional disposal opportunities expected later this year if demand remains high.
