Jackson, Kentucky – Eastern Kentucky residents have a brief stretch of quiet weather before a potentially stormy pattern returns later this week, bringing the risk of strong thunderstorms and locally heavy rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, high pressure will keep conditions mostly dry through Tuesday, with sunshine and comfortable temperatures dominating much of the region. Afternoon highs are expected to range from the lower 70s to lower 80s through Tuesday, providing a welcome break from recent unsettled weather.

The pattern begins to change Wednesday as moisture increases across the state. Rain chances climb to 10% to 40%, with showers and thunderstorms becoming possible Wednesday night from communities including Jackson, Hazard, Pikeville, Prestonsburg, Morehead and London.

The greatest concern arrives Thursday when rain chances increase to 90% across much of eastern Kentucky. Forecasters indicate some storms could become strong to severe, while excessive rainfall may also create localized flooding concerns. Areas with poor drainage, low-lying roads and small streams will be most vulnerable if repeated downpours develop.

Temperatures will remain warm ahead of the approaching system, reaching the lower and upper 80s Thursday before storms become more widespread. Scattered showers and storms may linger into Juneteenth as the weather pattern remains active.

Residents should use the quieter weather through Tuesday to review severe weather plans, ensure mobile alerts are enabled and monitor forecast updates. Additional outlooks and potential watches could be issued as confidence increases in Thursday’s storm threat.
