Chicago, IL – Residents across northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana should prepare for another round of thunderstorms Saturday, June 13, with some storms potentially becoming strong to severe during the late afternoon and evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, widely scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop later today as temperatures climb into the mid-80s. High temperatures are forecast to reach between 84 and 87 degrees before storm chances increase.

Forecasters say the greatest threat window will occur from late afternoon through the evening. While not everyone will see a storm, any thunderstorm that develops could produce hazardous weather.

The primary concerns include lightning, localized heavy downpours and gusty winds. The strongest storms may generate damaging wind gusts capable of downing tree limbs and causing isolated power outages. Hail large enough to dent vehicles and damage siding is also possible.

The overall severe weather threat remains relatively low across the Chicago metropolitan area, though parts of central Illinois face a greater risk for stronger storm development.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather conditions throughout the day, especially if they have outdoor plans. The National Weather Service advises moving indoors immediately when thunder is heard and having multiple ways to receive weather warnings.

Following Saturday’s storm threat, a significant cooldown is expected Sunday. High temperatures are forecast to remain in the upper 60s to lower 70s, accompanied by breezy conditions and a high swim risk at Indiana beaches along Lake Michigan.

Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to gradually rebound into the 70s next week, with additional chances for showers and thunderstorms returning Tuesday and Wednesday.

Saturday marks the second consecutive day of heightened weather concerns across parts of Illinois and Indiana following Thursday’s severe weather outbreak, which produced multiple tornadoes and widespread damage across portions of the region.
