Richmond, VA – Virginians face a busy weather day June 12 as dangerous heat and the risk of severe storms combine across much of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. EDT for much of the area, excluding the Virginia and Maryland Eastern Shore. Heat index values around or above 105 degrees could make heat-related illness more likely.

Residents are urged to drink plenty of water, limit sun exposure, wear lightweight clothing and stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible.

The weather threat is expected to shift later in the day as scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms develop during the afternoon and evening. Forecasters said the most likely window for storms is 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Most of the region is under a Slight Risk, level 2 of 5, for severe weather. The primary hazards include strong to damaging wind gusts and locally heavy rainfall. Isolated small hail is also possible, while tornadoes are not expected.

Localized flooding could occur where storms produce repeated heavy rainfall, especially in low-lying or poor-drainage areas.

The Virginia State Police also urged residents to stay weather aware as conditions change through the day.

Anyone with outdoor plans should monitor updates, have multiple ways to receive warnings and be ready to move indoors quickly if storms approach.

Drivers should use caution during heavy rain and never attempt to cross flooded roads.
