Omaha, NE – Residents across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa should prepare for multiple rounds of thunderstorms through Monday, with some storms capable of becoming strong to severe, according to the National Weather Service.
According to the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley office, scattered storms are expected Saturday, May 30, with additional thunderstorms developing during the evening and overnight hours. Forecasters say isolated hail and strong wind gusts are the primary hazards with stronger storms.
The greatest storm threat Saturday is expected during the early morning hours and again from the evening into overnight. Most of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa remains under a marginal risk for severe weather.
The threat increases Sunday, May 31, when portions of the Omaha metro, northeast Nebraska, and western Iowa fall under a slight risk for severe storms. Forecasters say isolated to widely scattered severe thunderstorms could develop during the afternoon and evening.
Sunday’s strongest storms may produce hail up to 1.75 inches in diameter, wind gusts between 58 and 65 mph, and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out. The highest threat window is expected from late afternoon through late evening, peaking around sunset and continuing into the overnight hours.
Storm chances continue Monday, June 1, with scattered strong to severe storms possible during the afternoon and evening. The primary concerns remain isolated hail and damaging wind gusts, although the overall threat level is expected to be lower than Sunday’s.
The National Weather Service urges residents with outdoor plans this weekend to stay weather aware, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and know where to seek shelter if severe weather develops.
