New Lexington, OH – A Flood Watch remains in effect into Saturday morning for portions of southeast Ohio as persistent rain and embedded thunderstorms increase the threat of flash flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected across Perry and Morgan counties through tonight, with isolated higher amounts possible where heavier thunderstorms develop.
Communities included in the watch area include New Lexington, Somerset, Crooksville, McConnelsville, and Stockport.
Forecasters said repeated rainfall over already saturated ground may lead to rapid runoff, causing creeks, streams, and low-lying roads to flood. Poor drainage areas and flood-prone neighborhoods could also experience rising water during heavier downpours overnight.
The weather system is expected to spread steady rain across southeast Ohio throughout Friday, with thunderstorms capable of producing localized bursts of intense rainfall into the overnight hours.
Officials warn that areas which received heavy rain earlier this week will be especially vulnerable to flooding. Smaller waterways could rise quickly if storms repeatedly track over the same locations.
Drivers are urged to use caution during overnight travel and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Residents should continue monitoring forecasts in case Flash Flood Warnings become necessary later tonight.
Rain chances are expected to gradually decrease by Saturday afternoon as the system begins moving east.
