Boston, MA – Dangerous heat and humidity are expected across much of Southern New England on Wednesday as a Heat Advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. EDT.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, heat index values could climb as high as 96 degrees across large portions of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The advisory includes major cities such as Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Hartford, Providence, Cambridge, Lowell, Quincy, Plymouth, and Warwick.
Forecasters said the hottest conditions are expected inland, while cooler temperatures are likely along the Massachusetts and Rhode Island south coasts, Cape Cod, and the Islands.
The combination of heat and moderate humidity may increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for older adults, children, and those spending extended periods outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service, residents should drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioned spaces when possible, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the afternoon hours. Officials also recommend checking on vulnerable family members, neighbors, and pets throughout the day.
People working or exercising outdoors are urged to wear lightweight clothing and limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours when temperatures are lower.
Health officials warn that symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke can develop quickly during prolonged heat exposure. Anyone experiencing dizziness, confusion, nausea, or rapid pulse should seek cooler shelter immediately and contact emergency services if symptoms worsen.
The Heat Advisory is scheduled to expire at 8 p.m. Wednesday, though warm and humid conditions may linger into the overnight hours across parts of the region.
