New York, NY – Dangerous heat and humidity are expected to grip New York City and parts of northern New Jersey throughout Wednesday, with heat index values climbing into the middle 90s by the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday for all five boroughs of New York City, including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The advisory also covers portions of northeastern New Jersey, including Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union counties.

Forecasters say the combination of high temperatures and humidity will create conditions capable of causing heat-related illnesses, especially for seniors, children, and people with chronic medical conditions.

New York City officials are encouraging residents to locate nearby cooling centers by calling 3-1-1. Residents without air conditioning are urged to spend time in air-conditioned public spaces during the hottest part of the day.

According to the National Weather Service, homes and apartments without proper cooling can become significantly hotter than outdoor temperatures, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Workers spending extended time outdoors are advised to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas and remain hydrated throughout the day. Health officials warn that anyone showing signs of heat stroke should be moved to a cooler location immediately, and 9-1-1 should be called in emergencies.

The heat advisory is expected to expire at 8 p.m. Wednesday, though warm overnight temperatures may continue to impact parts of the region into Thursday morning.
