Lincoln, Nebraska – Fires could spread out of control within minutes across southeast Nebraska this afternoon as powerful winds and dry air peak before sunset, creating dangerous conditions for anyone considering outdoor burning.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect for Seward, Lancaster, Otoe, and Saline counties until 10 p.m. Thursday. North winds are sustained at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching 45 mph, while relative humidity drops as low as 28 percent—an environment that can accelerate flame growth rapidly.

In Lancaster County, including Lincoln, open fields and dry grasses are especially vulnerable. Winds at this strength can carry embers across roadways like Highway 2 and Interstate 80, increasing the risk of roadside fire starts. Similar conditions extend into Beatrice, Nebraska City, and Seward, where rural fire departments may face fast-moving grass fires.

Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning, including fire pits and debris burning. Secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass, and report smoke immediately. Even small sparks can lead to large-scale fires under these conditions.

The warning remains in place through 10 p.m., with conditions expected to ease overnight. Additional advisories could be issued if dry and windy patterns persist into Friday.
