Grand Island, Nebraska — Temperatures will drop to near or below freezing overnight into early Saturday, threatening crops, outdoor plumbing and early morning travel across Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney, Lexington and Holdrege between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a freeze warning is in effect for north-central Nebraska while a frost advisory covers the rest of the region during the same time window. The coldest period will occur from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m., when temperatures fall to 27°F to 32°F in areas including Ord and Fullerton, with mid-30s elsewhere.
Sub-freezing temperatures can kill sensitive vegetation within hours and may crack unprotected outdoor pipes. Frost development is likely on exposed surfaces, reducing visibility and creating slick patches on bridges and overpasses along I-80 near Grand Island and I-70 corridors near the Kansas border. Low-lying rural areas and sheltered valleys near Hastings and Kearney will see the fastest temperature drops.
This is part of a broader system bringing unseasonably cold air into the central Plains following recent storms, increasing stress on early-season crops.
Residents should cover or bring in plants, disconnect hoses and protect outdoor plumbing, and use caution on early morning drives where frost may develop.
The most critical window for freeze damage and slick travel conditions will be between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. Saturday.
