Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — A widespread late-season cold snap is set to disrupt outdoor plans across the Midwest and East Coast overnight into Saturday, with frost and freezing temperatures developing within hours.

Cities including Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Des Moines, and Omaha will see temperatures drop into the upper 20s to mid-30s between midnight and 9 a.m. Saturday, creating conditions for frost and localized freezes.

According to the National Weather Service, a large stretch from Pennsylvania through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and into Nebraska is under frost advisories or freeze watches, with some areas dipping as low as 24 to 28 degrees by early Saturday morning.

The most significant impacts will hit early morning outdoor activities, including youth sports, weekend markets, and construction work. Frost can form quickly on exposed surfaces, creating slick patches on bridges and rural roads, especially in low-lying areas and valleys where cold air settles.

Gardeners and farmers face the highest risk. Subfreezing temperatures can kill early-season crops, damage flowering plants, and stress fruit trees during a critical growth period.

This is part of a broader system bringing unseasonably cold air southward behind a departing storm, allowing clear skies and light winds to maximize overnight cooling.

Drivers along corridors like I-80 and I-90 may encounter reduced visibility from shallow ground fog forming in frost-prone areas before sunrise.

Cover or bring in sensitive plants, avoid early travel on untreated rural roads, and allow extra time for morning commutes.

The most critical window for frost and freeze impacts remains midnight through 9 a.m. Saturday, when temperatures bottom out and surface freezing is most widespread.
