Minnesota wakes up to a sharp chill, with crisp air biting across Duluth as temperatures hover near freezing and rivers remain swollen along the North Shore.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures dipped to around 31–32°F early this morning across Duluth, Superior, Two Harbors, Cloquet, and Proctor. Calm winds and clear skies allowed frost to form quickly, especially in low-lying neighborhoods and sheltered valleys.

This is part of a broader system bringing below-average temperatures across the Upper Midwest while lingering water levels keep minor flooding active along the St. Louis River and north toward Ely.

The most immediate concern runs through 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., when patchy frost and possible thin ice may develop on bridges and untreated roads. Elevated surfaces along Highway 61 and I-35 near Duluth could see brief slick spots, especially in shaded areas and near Lake Superior where cold air pools.

Localized flooding continues along riverbanks and low-lying roads near the St. Louis River and Arrowhead region. Water may cover rural access roads and drainage-prone intersections, particularly outside Cloquet and toward Two Harbors.

Drivers should slow down on bridges and watch for sudden slick patches. Gardeners should cover sensitive plants immediately, as frost can damage early-season growth within minutes.

Sunshine will help temperatures rebound into the upper 40s by afternoon, improving road conditions.

Five-day outlook:
Saturday: 57°F, mostly sunny
Sunday: 59°F, breezy with gusts near 20 mph
