This is part of a broader system bringing much-below-average temperatures into the Midwest, allowing clear skies and light winds to maximize overnight cooling.
The impacts go beyond a chilly start. Frost can form quickly on exposed surfaces, damaging early-season gardens and sensitive vegetation. Homeowners in areas like Greenwood, Fishers, and Carmel may see frost coat lawns, especially in low-lying neighborhoods and rural outskirts where cold air settles fastest.
Travel could also be affected during the early morning commute. Bridges and overpasses along I-65, I-70, and I-69 may briefly turn slick if moisture freezes on contact, particularly in shaded areas and elevated roadways. Visibility may remain clear, but road grip could change quickly.
Residents should cover or bring in plants and avoid watering overnight, which can worsen freeze damage. Drivers should allow extra stopping distance early in the morning and watch for patchy slick spots.
Conditions improve quickly after sunrise Saturday as temperatures climb into the mid-50s with sunshine. Sunday warms further into the mid-60s, followed by a more active pattern early next week with rain and thunderstorm chances returning Monday into Tuesday.
The most critical frost window will occur between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday, when temperatures are coldest and frost formation is most likely.
