Nebraska wakes up under crisp skies and a biting chill, where frost clings to windshields and grass across south-central communities. The cold feels sharp early, but the story quickly shifts as temperatures rebound fast through the day.

According to the National Weather Service, Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, and Holdrege are under a frost advisory through 9 a.m., with temperatures dipping as low as 29°F in some rural spots. The most critical window runs through mid-morning, when frost can form quickly on exposed surfaces, including bridges and untreated roads like US-281 and Highway 6.

This is part of a broader pattern bringing much-below-average temperatures across the central and eastern U.S., even as warmer air builds just to the west.

The biggest impact hits agriculture and home gardens. Sensitive plants and early crops may suffer damage or be killed if left uncovered. Cold air settles fastest in low-lying farmland and sheltered areas, increasing frost intensity outside town centers.

Road impacts remain limited but real. Early drivers may encounter isolated slick spots where moisture and cold combine, especially on elevated surfaces. Use caution through mid-morning.

Conditions improve quickly by afternoon, with sunshine pushing highs near 61°F. That rapid warm-up reduces frost risk but highlights the sharp temperature swing common this time of year.

Another round of frost develops early Saturday, again before 8 a.m., before a strong warming trend takes hold. Highs climb into the 70s Saturday and upper 70s Sunday, with dry and sunny conditions dominating.

Looking ahead into early next week, temperatures hold in the upper 70s to near 80°F, signaling a strong shift toward late-spring warmth across Nebraska.

Protect plants through mid-morning and watch for isolated slick spots on bridges and rural roads as frost lingers across the Hastings area.
