Buffalo, New York — Rain showers are moving west to east across western New York Friday, slowing travel and reducing visibility through the afternoon before a sharp temperature drop brings frost overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the steadiest rain will fall between noon and 6 p.m. Friday, with the highest coverage across Jamestown, Olean and Wellsville, before tapering off this evening in Buffalo, Rochester and Batavia.

Wet pavement on I-90 and local roads may lead to slower travel during the afternoon commute, with water pooling quickly in low-lying stretches near downtown Buffalo, flood-prone intersections in Jamestown and rural drainage areas in the Southern Tier. Reduced visibility in passing showers could create brief slowdowns between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

As clouds break late Friday, temperatures will fall into the lower to mid-30s between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday across Buffalo, Rochester, Olean and Warsaw. The rapid cooling may allow frost to form on exposed surfaces, creating a risk for sensitive plants and potentially slick spots on untreated bridges and overpasses.

Drivers should watch for wet roads this afternoon and be alert for isolated slick spots early Saturday, while residents should cover plants before temperatures drop overnight.

The most urgent impacts shift overnight between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday, when frost development could damage vegetation and create isolated slick travel conditions.
