Brooksville, FL – A Brooksville man is facing a serious felony charge after deputies say he allegedly shot another man Thursday night in Hernando County.

According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened around 8 p.m. on Adams Street following reports of a shooting. Deputies arrived to find an adult male suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the buttocks.

Investigators say the victim had been walking through a wooded area as a shortcut from Star Road to his home on Madison Street when the incident occurred. The man reported hearing someone shout at him to stop and accuse him of trespassing. According to authorities, the suspect—identified as 29-year-old Zachary Ashmore—was allegedly standing on a second-floor balcony and pointing a firearm.

The victim told deputies he raised his hands and began walking away before Ashmore allegedly fired multiple rounds, striking him once. He was able to flee to a nearby residence and call 911. He was later treated at a local hospital and released.

According to investigators, Ashmore told detectives he retrieved his firearm after hearing dogs barking and believed someone was attempting to break into his home. He allegedly admitted to firing several rounds but claimed he intended only to scare the individual.

Deputies say the victim was outside the fenced perimeter of the property at the time of the shooting.

Ashmore was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a firearm. He is being held at the Hernando County Detention Center without bond.
