Joliet, Illinois – A Joliet Central High School art teacher is gaining national recognition after being named one of five winners of a prestigious education award honoring creativity and leadership in the classroom.

According to Joliet Township High School officials, Nyssa Grzyb was selected as a 2026 Crystal Apple Award winner by School Specialty, placing her among the top educators nationwide. The award was presented during a surprise ceremony at Joliet Central High School on Monday, April 28.

Grzyb was chosen from 16 finalists, narrowed down from hundreds of nominations submitted by students, parents, educators, and community members. Final winners were determined through a national public vote.

A Joliet Central student who nominated Grzyb credited her with inspiring confidence and helping students discover their passions. In nomination materials, the student described how Grzyb encouraged participation in advanced art classes and fostered creativity in the classroom.

School Specialty’s Crystal Apple Awards recognize teachers who go above and beyond to create supportive and engaging learning environments. Grzyb is one of five educators honored this year, alongside recipients from other states across the country.

Each winner receives a personalized award along with funding to support classroom and school resources. Grzyb said the recognition reflects her lifelong passion for teaching and her commitment to helping students find their artistic voice.

District officials said the honor highlights the impact educators can have on students both academically and personally, with Grzyb’s work serving as an example of dedication in the classroom.
