Peoria, Ill. — Temperatures will drop into the mid to upper 30s late Friday night, creating conditions for frost that could damage early-season crops and garden plants across central Illinois between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. Saturday. The coldest pockets are expected near Galesburg, Peoria, Springfield, Bloomington and Champaign, where exposed vegetation may develop frost quickly before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the highest frost potential will occur north of a Beardstown-to-Paris line, with a 30 to 50 percent chance of frost formation as skies partially clear and winds weaken overnight Friday into early Saturday.

Cold air settling into low-lying areas and rural drainage zones may allow temperatures to briefly dip to 32 to 36 degrees, increasing the risk of localized plant damage, especially in sheltered valleys and fields near rivers. This is part of a broader system bringing cooler air into the Midwest following recent mild conditions.

While road impacts remain limited, early Saturday drivers along I-55 and I-74 could encounter reduced visibility in patchy ground fog forming near frost-prone areas, particularly near river crossings and low spots outside Springfield and Peoria.

Cover sensitive vegetation Friday evening, move potted plants indoors and avoid leaving irrigation lines exposed to the cold.

The most critical window for frost formation is 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday, when temperatures bottom out and plant damage is most likely.
