West Rutland, VT – A Castleton man is facing a criminal charge after allegedly driving at excessive speeds through West Rutland late Tuesday night.

According to the Rutland County Sheriffโ€™s Office, the incident occurred March 17, 2026, at approximately 10:12 p.m. when Deputy Alan Frasier, assigned to patrol under the State Office of Highway Safety, allegedly observed a vehicle traveling 70 miles per hour in a posted 40 mph zone on Rutland Road near Poultney Pools.

Authorities said the driver, later identified as 30-year-old Preston A. Lerman, allegedly continued at a high rate of speed while turning onto Pleasant Street and then Sheldon Avenue. Deputies allege the vehicle was clocked at 54 mph in a posted 25 mph residential zone before a traffic stop was conducted.

Lerman, of Castleton, Vermont, was allegedly identified as the operator and was subsequently issued a criminal citation for negligent operation under Vermont law. He is scheduled to appear at the Vermont Superior Court โ€“ Rutland Criminal Division at a later date to answer to the charge.

In addition to the criminal citation, Lerman was allegedly issued multiple traffic tickets totaling $637 and faces 10 points against his driving license, according to authorities.
