Illinois: Vehicle Falls from Overpass onto Semi on I-57, Two Dead

Champaign County, IL – A catastrophic incident on Interstate 57 near Rantoul has resulted in two deaths, Illinois State Police have confirmed. 

The accident, which happened around 2:50 p.m. Christmas Day near the County Road 3200 bridge, involved a vehicle falling from the overpass onto a semi-trailer traveling northbound on I-57. A third vehicle, going southbound, was hit by debris from the collision. 

Both drivers of the vehicle that fell and the semi-trailer suffered fatal injuries. The third vehicle’s occupants were unharmed. 

The crash led to an extended closure of I-57. State Police continue to investigate the cause of this fatal crash.
