Missouri and eastern Kansas are waking up to sharp winds sweeping across open roads, rattling signs and pushing drivers on early commutes around Kansas City.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, north winds are already gusting between 30 and 40 mph. These winds will persist through the afternoon, keeping temperatures cooler despite sunshine, with highs near 53°F.

Major routes including I-70, I-35, and US-69 could see difficult driving, especially for high-profile vehicles. Expect crosswinds on exposed stretches and overpasses. Keep both hands on the wheel and allow extra space between vehicles.

The bigger concern is fire danger. Dry air and gusty winds combine to create elevated fire weather conditions through the afternoon and early evening. Avoid outdoor burning, and secure anything that could spark.

This cooler, windy setup shifts quickly. Temperatures rebound into the upper 60s Tuesday, then surge into the mid-80s by Wednesday. By Thursday, highs push near 90°F, marking a rapid transition into early spring heat.

A slight chance of light sprinkles arrives late Tuesday, but most of the region stays dry until late Thursday night. That’s when rain chances increase, with about a 50% chance of showers moving in and impacting travel into early Friday.

Meteorologists are watching this late-week system closely as temperatures swing sharply. For now, wind and fire risk dominate the short-term outlook.

Stay alert today, especially on open highways and rural areas. Are winds impacting your commute this morning?
