Springfield, Missouri – Storms developing later today could quickly intensify overnight, bringing damaging winds and large hail that may disrupt travel and knock out power across the Ozarks.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, isolated storms may form through the afternoon, but the main threat ramps up after sunset and continues into early Monday morning. A 50–70% chance of storms overnight includes the potential for wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail as large as golf balls. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out.
The highest concern overnight includes areas along and west of Highway 65, including Springfield, Joplin, and Branson. Roads like I-44 and US-60 could see sudden downpours and reduced visibility. While storms may remain scattered, any storm that develops could become severe quickly.
By Monday afternoon, a more organized severe threat shifts east, especially along and east of Highway 63 toward Rolla and West Plains, where an enhanced risk (Level 3 of 5) is in place. Large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes are all possible during the afternoon and early evening.
Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and ensure alerts are enabled before going to sleep. Another round of storms is possible Tuesday afternoon, though coverage will be more limited. Updates will continue as storm timing becomes clearer.
