Springfield, Missouri – Storms developing late today and intensifying Sunday could disrupt travel and bring damaging winds and hail across the Ozarks, with the greatest impacts expected during evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a 30–50% chance of storms develops this evening across southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas, mainly between 7 p.m. and midnight. While some areas may remain dry, any storms that form could produce hail up to golf ball size and wind gusts near 60 mph.
The threat increases Sunday with two potential rounds of storms. The first may develop during the afternoon with a 30–60% chance, followed by a stronger round Sunday evening into overnight, when storm coverage rises to 50–80%. Cities including Joplin, Springfield, Branson, and West Plains could see repeated impacts, especially along I-44, US-65, and I-49.
By Monday, the risk shifts east and intensifies. Areas along and east of Highway 63 face an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather between early afternoon and early evening. All hazards remain possible, including tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds.
Residents should monitor alerts, review severe weather plans, and avoid travel during active storms. Timing and exact storm locations may shift, with additional updates expected by Sunday afternoon.
