Indianapolis, Indiana — Work-zone speed enforcement cameras are expanding across several central Indiana highways beginning Monday, March 23.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), its Safe Zones automated enforcement program will resume along Interstate 70 in Hancock County and begin operating along Interstate 65 in Jasper County.
The enforcement program uses automated speed detection technology in active construction areas to monitor vehicles traveling through designated work zones. Drivers recorded exceeding posted work-zone speed limits may receive violation notices by mail.
INDOT identified three active Safe Zones enforcement locations across the region:
- Site 1: Clear Path project area along I-465/I-69 in Marion County
- Site 2: I-70 mile markers 104.9 to 109 in Hancock County
- Site 3: I-65 mile markers 210 to 219 in Jasper County
Transportation officials said the enforcement effort is designed to improve safety for highway workers and drivers moving through active construction corridors.
Under Indiana’s Safe Zones program, the first violation captured by the system results in a warning notice. Additional violations may result in civil penalties.
INDOT says the enforcement areas are marked with advance signage notifying drivers they are entering automated work-zone monitoring areas.
Construction activity and lane restrictions remain common along several of the affected interstate corridors, particularly around Indianapolis where the Clear Path project continues to reconstruct interchanges along I-465 and I-69.
Highway officials encourage drivers to slow down, follow posted speed limits and remain alert when traveling through construction zones.
The enforcement sites are located along heavily traveled commuter corridors used daily by regional workers, students and freight traffic moving through central Indiana.
More information about the Safe Zones program and active enforcement areas is available through INDOT’s Safe Zones website.
