ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. — MoDOT has opened a third eastbound lane on Interstate 64 in St. Charles County, easing congestion near a major interchange.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation’s St. Louis District, crews working on the Improve I-70 Design Build Project recently opened the third eastbound lane of I-64 between the I-70/I-64/U.S. 61 interchange and the Route 364/Route N interchange.
Transportation officials said the lane expansion is designed to improve traffic flow along a heavily traveled stretch of highway near Lake St. Louis and Wentzville, where multiple major routes converge.
MoDOT officials said work is also continuing on the opposite side of the highway. Crews are finishing the third westbound lane of I-64 between the Route 364/Route N interchange and the I-70/I-64 interchange, which will complete the widening segment once construction is finished.
The improvements are part of the broader Improve I-70 program, a multi-year initiative aimed at modernizing Interstate 70 across Missouri while also addressing nearby interchange bottlenecks and connecting routes.
Transportation planners have previously identified the I-70/I-64/U.S. 61 interchange area as a key congestion point in St. Charles County due to rapid regional growth and increasing commuter traffic.
MoDOT said the added capacity should help reduce merging conflicts and delays for drivers moving between the interstate corridors.
The newly opened lane may also benefit college students and young workers commuting between Wentzville, Lake St. Louis, and St. Charles, where job growth and housing development have increased traffic demand.
Additional construction activity may continue in the corridor as crews complete the remaining westbound improvements tied to the Improve I-70 project.
