Matteson, Illinois – Amazon plans to begin AI drone package deliveries this summer from its Matteson facility, expanding Prime Air service to parts of Chicago’s south suburbs.
According to the Village of University Park, drones will operate within an 8-mile radius of the Matteson location, covering portions of University Park, including residential neighborhoods, Hickory Creek, Village Hall, the industrial park and areas near Burnham Drive.
Amazon said eligible packages weighing up to five pounds can be delivered within about an hour of ordering. The service costs $4.99 for Prime members and $9.99 for non-Prime customers in markets where it is active.
The expansion follows similar rollouts in Pontiac, Michigan, and Arizona and Texas cities including San Antonio and Waco. In Michigan, Amazon recently announced growth into Hazel Park, serving a 7.5-mile radius that includes Highland Park, Center Line, Madison Heights and Oak Park.
In previous launches, residents have expressed mixed reactions. Some cited convenience and faster delivery times, while others raised concerns about noise, privacy and safety. Amazon has stated that its newer MK30 drones feature enhanced sensors and noise-reduction technology designed to operate more quietly in residential areas.
Amazon has set a long-term goal of delivering up to 500 million packages annually by drone by 2030.
Amazon will host a community event from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 2, 2026, at the Tinley Park Convention Center to provide additional details. The service could affect daily delivery patterns for commuters and households across the south suburbs.
