Walton, Indiana – A barn collapsed and burned Friday evening on South 1075 East, drawing multiple fire departments and spreading flames to nearby fields.
According to the Walton Community Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, to the 38XX block of South 1075 East for a confirmed structure fire. Officials said a large column of smoke was visible from several miles away, prompting mutual aid from Logansport Fire Department, Grissom Fire Department and Peru Fire Department.
Upon arrival, Walton Engine 82 found a roughly 60-foot by 70-foot structure fully involved and already collapsed. Firefighters reported that several acres of grassland and field were also burning due to windy and dry conditions.
Crews deployed two 2½-inch attack lines to protect nearby exposures before transitioning operations to the barn. Two 1¾-inch attack lines were later used to extinguish the structure fire. Truck 84 worked simultaneously to contain the field fire. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours conducting overhaul and extinguishing hot spots.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office. Officials said no foul play is suspected. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fire Marshal’s Office at 1-800-382-4628.
