Moncks Corner, S.C. – A Moncks Corner woman was arrested after deputies discovered a stolen license plate during a felony traffic stop Tuesday, triggering multiple charges.
According to Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis, 44-year-old Luwanda Evelyn Dargan was charged with Operating an Uninsured Vehicle (second offense), Driving Under Suspension (second offense), and Receiving Stolen Goods.
The investigation began Tuesday, when deputies responded to a Cane Bay residence regarding a reported stolen license plate. The victim told authorities the plate had been taken from an unmarked Charleston Aviation Authority police vehicle. The theft time was provided to deputies, and the plate was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database as stolen.
Later that same day, deputies reportedly observed the stolen plate on a vehicle traveling along Highway 52 and Highway 52. Authorities saturated the area and located the vehicle near the intersection of Highway 6 and U.S. Highway 17A. A traffic stop was initiated, and deputies conducted what they described as a felony stop.
According to investigators, Dargan allegedly told deputies she placed the plate on her vehicle knowing it did not belong to her. She was detained at the scene and advised of her rights.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing.
The case may be of particular interest to commuters who regularly travel the Highway 52 and 17A corridor.
