Milwaukee, WI – A 38-year-old man died after a police shooting Tuesday following a vehicle pursuit on the city’s northwest side, prompting an outside investigation.
According to the Milwaukee Police Department, officers conducted a traffic stop around 4:49 p.m. Tuesday near North Fond du Lac Avenue and West Locust Street for a registration violation. Police said the suspect initially stopped but then drove off, leading to a vehicle pursuit for reckless driving.
Authorities said the pursuit ended on the 9800 block of West Lisbon Avenue when the suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot. During the foot pursuit, officers reported seeing the suspect with a gun and issued commands for him to drop it. Police said the suspect refused, and two officers discharged their firearms, striking him. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
The man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.
The officers involved are a 46-year-old man with more than 10 years of service and a 40-year-old man with over eight years of service. Both have been placed on administrative duty in accordance with department policy.
The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team is handling the investigation, led by the Brookfield Police Department. Officials said the department’s video release policy calls for officer-involved shooting footage to be released within 15 days of the incident.
